Hi, I'm Bela, and I will be serving the families of Mount Holly School as well as those at Ludlow Elementary and Black River Middle and High Schools.

Have you ever heard that saying, "It takes a village to raise a child"? Ever wonder what that means? Any of us who are parents know that can be an overwhelming task to take care of all the things kids need to become the strongest, smartest, best people they can be- from basic needs like having a safe and comfortable place to live, teaching our kids to treat others with fairness (including their brothers and sisters!), and helping develop our kids' talents and skills. When we come together as a community to serve the needs of children, we help parents with this giant task. We also give those kids a chance to learn even more about living, since each person in a community has different skills and interests. Most of us will remember a particular adult in the community, outside our family, who had a special influence over us: a basketball coach, art teacher, principal, or religious educator. These are moments when our community helped us grow and learn something important about life.

Community is not just the place where we live, or the people who live together in that place, but also what we work together to make for ourselves. Building something together means getting to know one another, helping each other out, giving people a place to share their talents and resources as well as lend support to fellow community members. Schools are one of the most important things we build together: where we teach, nurture and pass our values on to the future members of our community.

This is our ideal, of course. There are times when that team of people who all care about and are involved in a young person's life are not working well together. They may not be talking or listening to each other very well, or they may have bad feelings towards each other, or they may have problems they do not know how to fix!

That is where I come in: I get to know families and help them work together with the school and other people in the community to help kids be the best they can be. I help families in a lot of different ways- helping parents try different ways to deal with kids having emotional and behavior problems, helping parents talk to teachers and school principals, finding ways for families to meet basic needs (food/shelter/ heat/etc.), getting groups of parents together to share ideas and help each other.

I wear a lot of hats and work with each family in a different way, depending on what they need and want from me. I hope that in time, I will come to know all of the families in this community and can help rally all of us around our children and teens!
